PiezoWave (Shockwave) Therapy

The PiezoWave is a specialized medical device used for Myofascial Acoustic Compression Therapy (MyACT), a form of focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT). It uses piezoelectric crystals to generate high-pressure acoustic pulses that are precisely targeted to deep tissues to relieve pain, improve circulation, and stimulate the body’s natural healing processes.

Key Features and Technology

  • Piezoelectric Effect: The device converts electrical energy into mechanical energy using a mosaic of crystals. When stimulated, these crystals expand and contract, creating focused pressure waves. Hill DT SolutionsHill DT Solutions +4
  • Precision Targeting: Unlike radial shockwave systems that disperse energy, the PiezoWave provides a “point-focused” shockwave that reaches depths between 0.5 mm and 10 cm (depending on the specific model and gel pads used).
  • Myofascial Acoustic Compression Therapy (MyACT): This specific technique uses these waves to “massage” deep tissues, helping to break down scar tissue and adhesions.
  • Customizable Depth: Practitioners use interchangeable gel pads of varying thicknesses to accurately adjust how deep the sound waves penetrate the body.

Common Uses

The PiezoWave is widely utilized to treat:

  • Chronic Pain: Conditions such as plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, and Achilles tendinopathy.
  • Muscle Issues: Myofascial trigger points, muscle strains, and neck or back pain.
  • Calcification: Helping to fragment calcium deposits, such as in calcific rotator cuff tendonitis.

What to Expect During Treatment

  • Duration: Sessions are relatively short, typically lasting 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Sensation: Most patients describe the feeling as a deep tissue pressure, a “tapping,” or a dull ache as the device targets irritation. It is generally well-tolerated and does not require anesthesia.
  • Frequency: A standard course of treatment involves 3 to 10 sessions, scheduled about 2 to 14 days apart.
  • Post-Treatment: There is no downtime, though some patients may experience mild soreness for 24–48 hours. It is often recommended to refrain from intense physical activity for 48 hours after a session.
